In her grand scheme to destroy the SCSU athletics department, and anyone in it who tries to accomplish anything positive, Charlene has given 2 week lay off notices to Brantley Evans, and Gerald Harrison. This is a part of an overall 100+ person layoff at the school. We have not issue with layoffs or restructuring, if it is done to make the university more efficient, but here is our problem.
Charlene gave notice to assistant football coach Harrison without notifying or consulting Coach Pough. This is a breach of Coach Pough's contract. If Pough had to let a staff member go, wouldnt it be prudent to discuss this with him? Maybe Harrison, who is one of our best recruiters, would not have been the one Pough chose. More so, why is it that the football team has to lose a staff member, when they are the main team generating revenue? Could it be that Harrison, was let go because of his relation to Brantley? It has been rumored for months that Charlene was looking for a way to get rid of Brantley. Word around town is that he had several good ideas on how to get a health and wellness center built, as well as other things. It is widely known around campus that Charlene will kill any idea that she feels will "make her look bad" because it wasnt hers. Charlene has retired and is on TERI, as are several other athletics department employees. So why is it that harrison and evans were let go as opposed to some of those guys? You keep people who are retired to let young people go? Even if in doing so, you breach the contract of our most successful coach and possibly put us in position for that coach to leave SCSU? She is already well into a plan to push Coach Carter, our mens basketball coach out. Now is she focusing on coach pough? She already hurt him by not requesting the funds for the players to come to summer school this summer, now she is getting rid of coaches just weeks before camp?
Something must be done about this. We have commented on how we need a real athletics director before, but she is really going to far. We are going to lose every coach that is successful if nothing is done. She has run a department deficit for the past 5 years, and it is unexplainable why President Cooper, who we feel is a smart man, would renew her contract. This situation is going to get very messy. Stay tuned.
